The public is beginning to connect the dots: prorogation, refusal to turn over documents, MPs who think they’re above the law. The Tories will not fare as well as they might think if an election is called. Also, the Libs and NDP may be ready to deal this time around.
When will the parties in opposition get a coherent climate change strategy which young people can rally around? Liberals wait for their “idea” conference and defend the tar sands, the NDP is stuck on cap and trade, and Elizabeth May’s Greens are still unrepresented. Without a strategy, they will not be able to unseat the Cons.
Harper gets the logic wrong everytime and all the time. When he said in the Mansbridge interview that the solutions to security breaches (such as the one in th U.S.) are not found by putting people on lists, he is precisely wrong. It was the fact that the suspicious individual was not put on the “no fly” list that was the problem. We all know how specious his logic was on participating in the Iraq war. And so it goes from prorogation to international affairs to crime, ad infinitum. Could someone just ask a good follow-up question for once.
Are we Canadians too polite to ask for our country back? It’s not about Ignatieff or Layton anymore. It’s about a progressive movement, electoral coalitions (If Ignatieff and Layton are opposed, then they should move aside). It’s about internet organizing, joining forces with fellow travellers in the media, and supporting a progressive agenda.
Ignatieff needs to put up this September. Too many important matters at stake – the environment, the economy, social programs. If he does not go, let’s start a draft Gerard Kennedy movement.
The Copenhagen Conference will be the issue in the next election. Canada has to get on side with world action. Anyone who can’t run against the Harper environmental record should not be the next PM.
News flash: Canadians need passports to enter U.S. Oh boy! We are not just Americans with health care, but a separate country. Okay, no more indulging our dark side , time to dump The Harguin, and give our image a sprucing up.
The time is now to combat climate change, gear up the green economy, and create jobs. Anything less is unacceptable.
Obama is hip, no doubt about it. The hippest thing since Bruce Springsteen. His hipness got him elected. He now sees himself as a hip Franklin Roosevelt calming fears with his “regular guy”, “I play the college basketball pool” persona. Unfortunately, hip may take him only so far. Being all things to all people will take him only so far. You need to pack something sturdier for the long course -vision, conviction and leadership are needed.
Ignatieff chose not to oppose or even amend a deeply flawed budget for his own short-term political gain. Political expediency is not leadership. Saying you support a policy and backing off when it counts is not political conviction. Silence on the crucial issues of the day is not vision. The opposite of leadership is no leadership.
